3/16/09 Dante Basini, age 87 died today March 16, 2009.
Dante was my father.
A resident of Ft. Lauderdale since 1952, Dante was a well-known figure
as owner of Dante’s Restaurant since 1961.
Born in New York City, to parents of Piacenza Italy, Dante, Danny to
his friends, was moved back to Italy in his early teens. Due to Mussolini’s
Fascist government rules that to go to public schools you had to join the
Fascist Youth, Dante was sent to private Catholic school. When the political
situation became untenable for him, as an American citizen, he was smuggled
out of Italy via Monaco and France, worked his way back to the USA on a
steamer as a waiter and then went to work in New York doing restaurant
work and various jobs including photography. It is in New York that he
met, and later married Shirley Liebermann who died on Armistice Day 2007.
As World War II loomed he joined the US Army and was rapidly promoted
to Sergeant. As he was fluent in 5 languages, he was eventually put in
charge of various non-English speaking recruits. Later he went to radio
school. He wanted to join the fight against Mussolini but, in the Army’s
wisdom, he ended-up on Iwo Jima as a radioman/control tower specialist.
He was extremely well respected for his adept control of massive emergency
landings on Iwo Jima. One of his favorite stories was the one concerning
the very first emergency landing of a B-29 Superfortress bomber. The plane
was almost out of fuel and had engines out. The tower at the time was a
Jeep. He brought the aircraft in with the statement that “when the pilot
got the plane on the ground, he needed to reverse ASAP as the enemy was
still in possession of the far end of the landing strip.” When the plane
landed, safely, it came back with massive bullet holes in the fuselage.
This scene has been featured in movies and documentaries.
After the war, Dante worked various restaurant jobs around the
NY area finally landing a job at the Charcoal Pit in the 5-Towns area of
Long Island. When the owner of the Charcoal Pit decided to open a restaurant
in Ft. Lauderdale on Sunrise Blvd, Dante was tapped as the manager. A job
he kept until he opened his own Restaurant, Dante’s on US 1 just south
of Oakland Park Blvd.
Dante’s for over 35 years, remained one of the Hot Spots in evening
dining. Dante’s, and Danny himself, attracted many high profile customers
such as Jackie Gleason and Johnny Carson.
Danny closed the restaurant in 1998 and sold the property to
the Harley Davidson dealership.
Dante is survived by Daughter Lisa Basini-Collotte, her son Daniel,
son Richard Basini, brother Aldo Basini of Piacenza and sister Ida Doti
of Pontenurre in Italy.
Danny will be sorely missed by one and all who had the pleasure of
his acquaintance.
